Guidelines for Visual and Performing Arts

Wave Hill presents the work of contemporary visual and performing artists who explore the multifaceted relationships between nature, culture and site through solo and group exhibitions in Glyndor Gallery, Wave Hill House, the Sunroom Project Space, on the grounds, through the Winter Workspace residency program and generated@wavehill. Visual artists may apply online. Performing artists are invited to submit materials on a rolling basis to be considered for our concert and live arts series. The Sunroom Project Space provides an opportunity for New York City-area artists at the early stages of their career, irrespective of their age, to develop and present a site-specific solo project at Wave Hill. The exhibition spaces available for 2025 are the windowed Sunroom and Sun Porch in Glyndor Gallery and the newly renovated Glyndor Terrace. Wave Hill seeks proposals for artist projects that engage with the site of Wave Hill (the plant collection, histories and other aspects of the grounds) and the intertwined relationships between nature and the borough of the Bronx. For the 2025 season, Wave Hill is particularly interested in projects that provide new perspectives on constructs of nature as they shape, inform and relay histories about the Bronx, including but not limited to Riverdale where Wave Hill is located, the surrounding neighborhoods and the diverse neighborhoods and communities of the Bronx.
Five artists will be selected for solo exhibitions and will receive an honorarium of $2,000 each. One artist will be selected to present a site-specific project or a series of performances on Glyndor Terrace with an honorarium of $6,000. In addition, Sunroom Project Space artists will receive exhibition and professional development support. Artists will have six to twelve months to research and develop their ideas and create new work. Organized by Curator of Visual Arts Rachel Raphaela Gugelberger, each project is accompanied by a Meet the Artist program co-designed with the artists and an exhibition essay published both in print and online. The Meet the Artist program provides an opportunity for Wave Hill visitors, the artist’s community, and others to learn more about an artist’s creative process and the themes within their work.
Eligibility:
- Wave Hill welcomes applications from artists who work across media;
- Are in the early stages of their career;
- Live within a 50-mile radius of the Bronx;
- Students enrolled in a degree-granting program; artists with commercial gallery representation; and/or who have previously exhibited at Wave Hill are not eligible;
- Artists may submit proposals for consideration online through SlideRoom;
- Applications are reviewed by a jury comprising of Wave Hill’s Curator of Visual Arts, a guest curator and a previous Sunroom Project Space artist. Artists interested in applying are encouraged to visit Wave Hill and Wave Hill’s website and arts pages before applying;

Artists with projects that address the natural world are welcome to submit proposals for future consideration. Due to the high number of submissions that we receive, we will only respond to those artists whose work suits the programs that are being planned.
